Similar to the ease in which I obtained both my son's and daughter's birthday lanterns, was the ease in which I obtained the same for my parents. I could about even cut and paste the circumstances of how I got Mom's 220B to how I got Dad's 228B; in January, 2018 I  acquired both of these pieces from another collector. The biggest difference was this 220B did not come with a globe.

In the 228B I discussed the difference between it and its predecessor, the L228, so for the 220B I will discuss the difference between it and its successors, which I'll define as the 220C - 220F (the 220H, J, and K are completely different beasts).

First is materials.  The 220B was born pre-WW2, so choice metals such as nickel and brass were apparently more easy to come by.  The fount "bell" is nickel plated brass with a galvanized steel bottom.  This would continue through the 220D, with the 220C and a few years of the 220D being painted.

The pump cap, as with the 220C, is a one piece screw on which was replaced by a push-on cap held in place by two small screws (220D, 220E (early) and then later by the same cap but held on with a spring clip (220E(late), 220F).

The collar(aka base rest) has no identifying model number. In fact, most later 220B's and 228B's have NO identifying model number anywhere on the lantern; only the first few years had a "220B" stamped crudely on the bottom of the fount (this also applied to the 228B).

Very early 220B's had "ears" on the fuel cap to assist in removal which was later replaced by the familiar knurled, round cap (through 220F) .

The bail on the 220B is removable and is held in place with cotter pins (swaged on all following models), and the vent is the "high holey" variety that would run through the 220E, though very early models had no brim.

There are also some minor variations in the fuel delivery system that I'm not going to list which are specific to the 220B, but don't really provide any difference in function.  However, something in these differernce results in the famous 220B "slurp",  a distinct drinking sound produced by the B series while running.
