Many collectors consider the 1930's to be the pinnacle of Coleman quality. As with most other industries, this came to a crashing halt on Dec. 7, 1941; the start of World War 2 for the USA.

Quality and availability of new Coleman products was greatly diminished during the war years, where materials like brass and nickel were reserved for military use and even just buying a lantern was only available to a select few essential industries like farmers.

Coleman seemed poised to the lantern line to glory with the 220/228D, but apparently nickel was still in sparse supply in 1947 as to-be nickel plated lanterns and stoves like the 242C, 220D and 500 stove would be painted green instead.

Another rare eBay purchase for me, I found this one semi-locally that I could pick up and also included a valuable reflector handle and original "Coleman" straightline logo globe; my first for both.

This variant also features a yellow instruction/warning decal very similar to its 220C predecessor. Mine was almost entirely deteriorated so I replaced it with an after market decal.
